HEIKO STRIBL

Iceberg Running || Mental Run Model

Ah no, its not a “life hack” or a “get fast quick scheme”… if you go back and listen to some of the previous episode, suppose you are a new listener, what you will find is someone (me) with a passion for running, who has not only been an active runner for over 35 years, but also you know I wanted to understand why some runners can easily go a certain distance that others cannot even think about… cannot wrap their heads around. And then I had the privilege of working with many top trainers, and having trained runners be it in the states, or in Europe understood.. hey the main area of improvement is not where the focus is being placed on. Where focus goes energy flows. And the marketing machine out there… they get our focus. The apparel manufacturer, they know how to highlight a problem and let you come up with the obvious conclusion that THEIR product is the solution. And so many runners, have the smart watch, the app, the special shirt, the shoes… but het you know what… the times the distances… most of us are running far beyond our potential. 1. The Event Level The event level is the level at which we ordinarily see the world — for example, you deceide to stick to the 3:00 hour pacer at the start of the marathon, this is something you trained for… but…. Right into the first couple of km’s of the race… you feel this pace is way too hard. Ever had that? While this issue can be corrected with straightforward action, the iceberg model pushes us not to jump into a solution. We need to get more facts.. so steps 2… 2. The Pattern Level When we look just underneath the event level, we often see patterns. Comparing the events over the next few KM’s ime we may see that we are actually on pace. This is something we trained for. Whats the pattern here…. 3. The Structure Level Underneath the patterns level lies the structure level. At the point when we ask, “What is causing the problem we are observing?” the appropriate response is normally some sort of structure. For example, Let’s analyse and see what’s up? Did we hydrate enough, energy level? 4. The Mental Model Level Mental models are visual representation in our minds, convictions, ethics, desires and qualities that enable structures to keep working as they seem to be.
